Cooperative Extension has historic roots in agriculture and the environment from helping commercial farmers and growers (through Agricultural Extension Agents) to home lawn and garden enthusiasts (through the Master Gardener program), Extension has knowledge and expertise to share.
According to the 2002 census, there were 696 farms in Wood County. The value of agriculture products sold during 2002 was $3,400,000 which was produced on 77,035 acres of farm land.
To meet the varied interests and needs of the Wood County agriculture community, education and research efforts assist clients to create sustainable agriculture and forestry production and marketing systems that are competitive, environmentally sound, and socially acceptable.
These activities include horticulture, livestock production and marketing, soil nutrients and grassland production, animal health education, biosecurity, natural resource education, environmental education and awareness, youth agriculture development, and adult educational programs in agriculture. Specific programs in Wood County include Master Gardner, Farmer’s Short course, Animal Health Workshops, Quality Assurance Training, Pesticide Recertification, and 4-H Youth Animal projects.
